A "Death" in the Family

I knew this day would come, and honestly, it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be...

The Lumina went to Carney's on Wednesday :(

Here are some parting pictures... As you can see, it was an open-casket funeral.

She leaves behind lots of good memories -- trips to Utah, California, and Maine... We adopted her in 1999 when she only had about 88,000 miles - and at the time of her retirement, she had 267,780 miles.

The Lumina is survived by her friend the white Oldsmobile 88, which is the stylish ride Joel will be taking to and from Des Moines (until we decide to afford and buy a new car for him :).

The good news is that our used car lot (a.k.a. our front yard) and our registration list with the county has shrunken considerably since this time last year!

This is My Father's World

Ever have one of those weeks? Those weeks when it seems like bad news and injustice are surrounding you?

I've been listening to Jadon Lavik's CD, Roots Run Deep and this song has stuck in my head. The lyrics follow.

This is my Father's world
and to my listening ears,
All nature sings
and round me rings,
the music of the spheres

This is my Father's world
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees
of skies and seas
His hand the wonders wrought

This is my Father's world
O let me never forget
That though the wrong
seems often so strong,
God is the ruler yet

This is my Father's world
oh the battle is not done!
Jesus Who died
will be satisfied
And earth and Heav'n will be one

Yes Jesus who died will be satisfied
and earth and heaven
Oh earth and heaven
oh earth and heaven
will be one

----------

I keep thinking of the line -- "That though the wrong seems often so strong, God is the ruler, yet." It just doesn't feel that way some days.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday to me... :) Joel got a babysitter so we could go out for supper! We drove to Ankeny and had Leaning Tower of Pizza --- without kids. :) He looked up movies, and decided there wasn't anything worth seeing, so he asked me what else I wanted to do...

What do you do when you turn 31 and have a Friday night out without the kids?? Go grocery shopping. Yeah - you read that right. And more specifically - "coupon shopping" - which is a little different than just plain ol' grocery shopping.

Here's my picture:

I (We!) shopped at 4 stores - Cub Foods (I actually went there earlier in the day), Walgreens, Target, and Walmart.

My 2 most impressive deals are these:

--Walgreens:
6 Ragu spaghetti sauce $1.67ea. ($10)
1 Pert Plus ($3.79)
2 Biofusion shampoo/cond. $5.99ea. ($11.98)

I used:
$0.25/1 Ragu
$2/1 Pert Plus
$3 RR from last week
$5 off a $20 purchase
This made my total $16.17 with tax.
I expect to receive $11.98 + $3.79 ($15.77) in rebates for the shampoos, which means my bags of groceries will cost me $0.40! (Plus I got back $4 RR for my next purchase)

--Cub Foods:
4 South Beach single serve pizzas $2.50ea. (I ate one before I took the picture!)
2 packages Bic Pens $0.50ea.
1 can of Planter's Honey Roasted peanuts $2.59 (not shown - I gave them to the guys at work)
2 lbs of grapes $1.99/lb

I used:
4 $2/1 pizza coupons
1 $1/2 Bic stationary
1 $3/1 Planter's coupon (the pizzas qualified as Kraft items)
1 $1.99 off grapes at Cub

My total after coupons and tax = $3.83
and I got back a coupon for $3.00 off my next purchase at Cub Foods!

--The rest of the items in the picture, I bought with just regular coupons. Everything in the picture cost about $4 after all the rebates and coupons are applied :)

Happy Birthday!

Update: 3-Month Coupon Trial

If you do not care about coupons and such - just skip this post - it will bore you.. :)

On May 21st I posted that I had delved into the world of all things "coupons". I decided to try it for 3 months to see if the time I invested was worth the money savings and to see if I would notice a difference in our monthly budget.

My results are mixed, yet positive. Here are the results of my coupon experiment:

First, I had to establish a "system". I found that to be effective and quick, I have to be organized. This is a picture of my "system".

-- The blue folder is my money folder that I bought when we started doing the Dave Ramsey cash budget about 2 years ago. There were empty spaces that I filled with coupons sorted into categories. Food and Household categories and then I used a couple of the spaces for coupons I know I want to use at specific stores for sales that week. I have a separate Walgreens, Walmart, and Target sections.

Truthfully, I have outgrown this system (I have too many coupons!) and it takes me an embarrassingly long time to find some of them sometimes when I'm standing in the aisles at the store. There are better ways, and I am investigating :)

-- On the left are white papers. Those are copies of rebates I mailed in. I got "burned" on one and did not receive my rebate. Since then, I've made copies, kept them until I got the check, and then tossed the copies.

-- On the right are my coupons. They are inserts that come from the Sunday papers and copies of the All You magazines I bought for the coupons. I cut what I need from the inserts and leave them whole in case other deals come up later. I usually get 3 copies of the inserts each week. (Here you get a free paper when you fill up with gas on Sundays.)

Second, I haven't really cut money from our budget. Or have I? This is a tricky one. I have spent our allotted monthly budget each month of this trial. I kept waiting for the $50 savings or even $100 (my goal) but it never happened.

What did happen however, is my "stockpile". This is a term and a strategy - if you will - that I learned from my online, coupon-y, blogging friends. Stock up on deals when they come around so you don't have to pay full price later.

Against my better judgement, I took two pictures of my basement closet (the site of most of my stockpiling) and did an inventory of what I have collected.
8 bottles of hand soap
3 bottles of shower cleaner refills
7 packages of 'pads'
8 packages of Clean Team wipes
There's other stuff (Kleenex and stuff) but I didn't get those as part of a deal.
18 tubes of toothpaste
16 bottles of shaving cream
10 bottles of shampoo (Pantene for me, Pert Plus for Joel)
5 toothbrushes
18 Buddies bars of soap
8 Lady Speed Stick deodorant
1 Ladies razor and 12 replacement blades
7 men's razors
10 Glade plug-ins air fresheners

So when I say I haven't saved money, I really haven't. On the other hand, I don't plan to spend money on toothpaste, soap, razors, shaving cream, or wipes until 2010. Eventually, these savings should catch up with me!

What have I learned?
-- I have saved close to $1000 using coupons. (I kept a spreadsheet for my 3-month trial).

-- I save an average of 60% on everything I buy. Some things are full price, some are free. It averages out to about 60%. (again, according to my spreadsheet)

-- I have a love/hate relationship with "couponing". I love the deal part -- getting something for close to nothing. I hate the conflict part. Rude cashiers, having to call the manager, and one time having to leave HyVee without my groceries because they wouldn't accept my internet coupons. (Even good-natured, Joel was frustrated that night!)

-- My outlook has changed. Cereal shouldn't be more than $1 per box. You should not pay for air-fresheners and most cleaning supplies. Fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, baby formula, and toilet paper -- no deals that I've found, you just have to buy them!

-- I have tried new products. In fact, I've tried more in the last 3 months than I can count. Some have become my favorites, some have been terrible. If they turn out to be terrible, it usually doesn't matter because it was free or close to it.

-- I ventured into Walgreens. Since we do not have a CVS in central Iowa, I am "forced" to shop at Walgreens. It is a confusing, unreliable, system of a store (especially in Ames!) but I have gotten many free or deeply discounted things there. Usually I make one trip per week and I plan for this trip like I would study for a college exam.

-- "Stockpiling" is dangerous. Dangerous for me, at least. Growing up the way I did, I get too much comfort from having a large bank account balance. Add in a "stockpile" of things and I will be tempted to trust in horses, chariots, toothpaste, and deodorant instead of in God who is my Provider, my Protector, and my real Peace.

Finally, I have decided that I will keep this up. It is somewhat time consuming - I have conceded that. But having come this far and seen this much in savings, it would be nearly impossible to go back to paying full price for everything. I will take breaks (especially in February and March!) and I will buy things we need - even if it means paying full price.

This has been an interesting 3 months for my family and I think we are better for it. I feel better equipped now to go down to one income and to have two kids in diapers. If you knew me and knew my "money habits" five years ago, you would be shocked at how things have changed!

If you're interested in any of this and you have questions, send me an email. I will be glad to try to help. :-)

Doctor's Visit x 2

On Tuesday, I had my first OB doctor's appointment. We heard the baby's heartbeat and were excited about that and also that everything seems to be going fine. I expressed my concern over my terrible A1c, (8.9) and she assured me that "really I think anything in the 8's is ok". Honestly, I think that is bad advice, but it did make me feel better :) For her sake I will not repeat that to my endocrinologist...

Since I'm a Type 1, she's told me that I can go to Des Moines for a Level II ultrasound to get a little better view and a more in-depth study of all the baby's parts. With the other two kids, I refused -- opting instead to have a family friend (Jan) do the ultrasound here in town. I decided with this one though, to go to Des Moines -- if only for my peace of mind :) (Plus, I think it will be in 3D, and I've heard that's really great.) That appointment won't be for another 6 weeks, so I will try to be patient. Try.

I am 14/15 weeks along and will be due February 12. (Given my history of 10 pounders, I would guess very early February instead?)

-------

Grant had his 1-year check-up yesterday. He was 95% for height, 90% for weight (I didn't even hear what he weighed -- Reagan was talking too much) and 40% for head size (??). The nurse was new and I think maybe she made a mistake -- that seems really low -- especially if you've seen Grant :)

He got 4 shots and a finger stick. He didn't cry for the finger stick, and he sat still because he was interested in what the lab technician was doing. That was great for me since I just finished trying to keep him (& Reagan-the-incessant-talker) entertained for the 45 minutes that the three of us spent in the 4' x 6', germ-filled, exam room. It was another "character-building" trip to the clinic.

-------

Lastly, a conversation Reagan-the-incessant-talker and I had this morning as we were getting in the van to go to Sadie's:

Reagan: "Mommy, is that a diaper coupon you have in your hand?"

Me: "No Honey, it's for dog food."

(long pause)

Reagan: "Mom? Do we have a dog?"

(another long pause)

Me: "Um, no. We don't...? I was going to give the coupon to Sadie."

The Bartlett Family Vacation

We're back from vacation and I could sure use a... vactaion. :) It was fun, but the four of us are happy to be home and in our own beds!

Our theme this year was: "Vacation Is Good For You".

The first night, I made my family eat supper at the Cracker Barrel - its my favorite place to eat, and only my sisters could understand the irony of this restaurant choice... I didn't have to take any of the abuse my Dad took for making us eat there when we were kids -- my family actually seemed to enjoy it :)

On Friday, we visited the Omaha zoo. It turns out that Reagan and Joel have about the same attention span for looking at the exhibits. We were able to "look at" the majority of the zoo before lunch-time. I wish I could have counted the times I heard Joel tell Reagan "Oops, I think we lost Mommy (again)".
Here are some pictures from our day...

Reagan with Mufasa.

Our new family photo:

Reagan with the polar bear's back-side.

Grant in one of the tunnels in the Gorilla building. This was towards the beginning of the day when he still liked the stroller.

Grant finally fell asleep around 10:30,
so Joel and Reagan took a tour of the petting zoo. I think this is the same goat she posed with last year...

Lunch! (Seriously.)

On the train. Reagan begged (lots) to ride the train. We agreed and as we waited in line with a grouchy, stubborn, crawling, antsy, one-year-old, the train finally arrived and blew it's whistle. Reagan freaked out (she has a huge fear of loud noises) and decided she didn't want to ride the train - she was too scared. Sorry, Reagan! Get on board. Vacation is good for you.

Grant was as bad on the train ride as he was when we were in line. I think he would have thrown himself overboard if I had loosened my grip during one of his fits. Vacation is good for my patience, too.

On the carousel. Joel is hidden behind the zebra.

After a long day at the zoo, and a short afternoon nap, we made a stop at Chuck E. Cheese. I took this picture because the daughter of two engineers should not eat pizza this way.

The second day, we took the kids swimming...
...and then to the Omaha Children's Museum. What a great place! There was a "Wiggle Room" for kids Grant's age. It was a nice change for him after being strapped in the stroller for the whole day at the zoo!
Reagan loved the Children's Museum even more than Grant. There was a children-size store where they took turns "shopping" and "working at the checkout". There was a child-sized house, an arts & crafts station where you could draw, color, glue stuff, and paint your own face. There was a dinosaur exhibit (Reagan didn't even notice the dinosaurs, she just made a beeline for the play structure) and Clifford the Big Red Dog was even there to give out hugs.

The kids had a great time... but I think we pushed Grant's limits a little too much. On the way home, I kept thinking of the movie Dumb and Dumber... "Want to hear the most annoying sound in the world? EEeeeeeeeehh!" That's the sound that Grant made in the car for most of the 3-hour trip - when he wasn't having a tantrum or crying. Ah, Grant.... this is why vacations are not all fun, but they are good for us :)

Happy Birthday, Buddy!

Happy Birthday, Grant! You won't realize it for awhile, but you are one blessed little boy! You had a fun day today at your birthday party and you were surrounded by people who love you... You don't realize that you have even more "fans" who couldn't be here today :) You sure are one lucky kid!

Here's some pictures for you of your 1st birthday - since you won't actually be able to remember it when you're older... :)

Before your party, Aunt Emily, Uncle Jason, Cale & Ayla came early to hang out. You got to experience a Slip 'n Slide, blueberries, and peanut butter sandwiches for the first time! None of those was as fun for you as it was to swing with Daddy and Uncle Jason.
This is a picture of the cake I made for you. Daddy said he knew you wouldn't mind if I bought a cake from Hy-Vee, but other people might wonder if I loved you... :) (Since you don't have any favorite TV characters, I just made it to match your plates and napkins. Kind of boring, I know... :)

Reagan insisted that we have party hats for your birthday. When everyone came to your party, she made sure to pass them out. Grandma & Grandpa Ridder were good sports and even let Daddy take their picture... :) (Hi Grandma & Grandpa -- thanks for coming to the party!)

Here's a picture of Grandpa on the swing with Reagan and Cale and Ayla. (Notice the party hats!)

You with your cake while we were singing "Happy Birthday" to you. You didn't know quite what to do while everyone was staring at you and singing...

You did know what to do with the piece of cake, though!

This is a picture of you having a fit. See that toy to the right? Aunt Sandy and Uncle Greg got that for you -- you wanted to play with it, and I tried to make you open more presents. You won...

...and Reagan was happy to finish opening your gifts for you. Be sure to give her a hug when you're old enough to thank her for helping you... :)

As you can see Buddy, you are loved! Happy Birthday!
