While Mom Was Away...

...Reagan cut her hair.

I know what you're thinking... "Where was the babysitter?"

This is going to surprise you, but Joel said he "wasn't paying attention."

The Rewards...

I've been really busy at work lately and felt like I haven't been spending enough time with the kids, so I've made it a priority the last two days to connect with them. Among other things, I took Reagan with me to a baby shower yesterday - yikes.

Today as I was walking with Reagan down to the basement for her nap, out of nowhere she said "I love you, Mommy." so I said "I love you too, Reagan."

She said "Yeah, we love each other!" Then she stopped walking and turned around to look back at me and said, "We are two silly girls who love each other!"

Yes we are - and how great is that??

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter from the Bartlett house!

We celebrated at Joel's parents' house and had a fun time with family and extended family :) We forgot our camera, so when we get pictures from Dave & Linda, I will post some...

Reagan had such a fantastic time - somehow I think she is an extrovert (Joel and I are not :). There were so many people there on Sunday that I think for Reagan, there were finally enough people paying attention to her. :) The picture I have in my mind is of her standing in the living room in the middle of a circle of guys all sitting, reading the paper, or talking. She is wearing her Easter dress and is tossing a balloon in the air, catching it and saying "watch me, guys - wook at me, guys!" She would get an occasional look or someone would say "good job" or something, but I don't think she ever really caught on that she was playing to the wrong audience.

I've been trying to teach her about Easter (see here) and for the most part, I really think she got it... maybe. As we were talking and then praying before bed tonight, we reflected on the weekend and talked about what we liked best. She liked the candy - not surprising. Then her prayer went something like this: "Thank you God for Mommy and Daddy, and for Jesus, the cross, help, hiding the hunt. A-MEN!"

I wrongly assumed that she was thanking Jesus for the Easter Egg Hunt so when she was done, I asked her if that's what she was talking about. She said no - she was thanking Jesus for hiding the Easter Eggs for the egg hunt. That surprised me...

Mom: "So Reagan, you think that Jesus hides the eggs for the egg hunt?"
Reagan: "Yes"
Mom: "What makes you think that?"
Reagan: She was impatient with me for being a slow learner, so she was a little sassy as she said, "Because, Mommy, Jesus helps us when we need help!"
Mom: "So that's how Jesus helps us - he hides the eggs when we need him to?"
Reagan: "Yep"

It was time for bed and not theology so I didn't try to change her mind - maybe another day. And so that you know -- she saw the Dads and the Uncles go outside to hide the eggs...

I'm sort of glad I didn't try to explain St. Patrick's Day.

My Cousins Are Here!

Tonight Joel's parents and his older brother, Jer came for supper. We've all been looking forward to this visit for the last week - Reagan in particular. She's been planning all the stuff she will tell them and show them -- take this morning for example... It snowed in the night so this morning Reagan was excited (you think she would be used to it by now) and told me that "I'm going to tell my cousins that it snowed this morning!" (If you're confused about the "cousins" part - see the previous post.)

Grant was up nearly every hour last night because of his latest cold, so I was exhausted before we even started the day. I briefly debated staying home, but that is generally more exhausting than going to work, so off we went. Grant was terrible for Sadie and since he is usually a happy kid, I picked them up early and we went to the doctor. As it turns out, Grant has an ear infection and off we go to the pharmacy. By this time Joel's parents were already at our house -- Joel was on his way home, and I was a ways away from being done at the pharmacy. Sorry, guys.

The night went great and Reagan had lots of fun playing Hide and Go Seek with Daddy and Grandpa. I love for Joel's parents to connect with the kids, so the plan was for Linda to feed Grant his bottle and put him to bed. Grant had other plans - he barfed all over...

I get a great deal of satisfaction (in a prideful sort of way) when I have my act (and my kids' acts) all together. I like for my house to be clean, my kids to be clean, and my family to be on such a predictable schedule that we don't even need to talk about it -- everyone just knows what comes next, and we all just agree and follow the script. Days like today are sort of hard on me.

Dave, Linda, and Jer (and Reagan!) will all tell you that things went great (thanks mostly to my Dad, who cleaned before, cooked supper, cleaned up supper, and did the dishes - our dishwasher broke yesterday) No one actually cares about the house, or about supper, its all about spending time together -- I know that. But for now I am feeling a little out of control, a lot less prideful, and a little afraid that I am headed for another sleepless night...

My Cousins Are Coming!

Since the only people who really come to visit us are Sarah's family, Reagan thinks that anyone who comes from out of town to visit our house are called "cousins". :)

Joel's parents are coming for supper tomorrow night, and when I was telling Reagan about it, she got really excited and shouted "My cousins are coming! My cousins are coming!" I corrected her and told her it wasn't Aunt Sarah, but that it was Grandma and Grandpa who were coming. She said, "I know, my cousins are coming! My Gramdma, my Grandpa, and my Uncle Jer are my cousins!"

I haven't bothered to correct her.

A Policeman Can Help You

Lately, I've been teaching Reagan about calling 911 and asking a policeman for help if she gets lost or needs help. Even though she's a little too young, I've done this for two reasons: The first is because she has been scared of the police sirens and I don't want her to be. The second is because I'm a diabetic and may need her to call 911 and save my life some day. (A VERY small chance, but still a chance.)

This is tmi for the internet, but here it goes anyway..

Yesterday, as I was helping Reagan put her pants back on after she went potty, I noticed some uh... streaks (I know, yuck - sorry) in her underpants, so I wanted to take the opportunity to teach her. I told her that that happens when you don't get clean enough, and its ok to still ask a grown-up for help when she needs it. We talked about asking mom and dad when she's at home, and asking Sadie for help if she's at Sadie's house. Reagan didn't even pause for a second, before she said, "If Sadie is not there, I can ask a policeman and he will help me!"

I laughed and said that policemen are usually too busy helping people with emergencies and its more of a mommy or daddy's job to help with wiping... She said she would "ask the policeman anyway, and maybe he'll say yes."

Um... can you imagine that conversation? Ok, Reagan you can ask the policeman, but just be sure it is when you are out with Daddy and not with me, ok?

Reagan, Reagan, Reagan...

Yesterday, I took Reagan and Grant to the chiropractor. Always an adventure and I'm usually sweating by the time we all get back out to the van... yesterday was no exception.

We were waiting for our turn to go back when a bigger-type guy came in. He had a big red-ish beard and mustache looked kind of like a biker-type. He was wearing a flannel shirt, black jeans, and had a lycra skullcap with like these tie things hanging down from it. I barely noticed him until Reagan looked up from her coloring book and said, "That's a bad guy, Mommy." and then looked back down and continued to color. Oh man, Reagan... how do I explain to her not to say stuff like that??

I don't think the guy heard her - at least for everyone's sake he pretended he didn't hear her and he came and sat down two chairs away from where she was coloring. He smiled at her and said hi, she kind of smiled back and I thought everything was ok -- see? he's not a bad guy...

Until Reagan looked up at me and said "That's a scary guy, Mommy!" Oh geez, Reagan. The guy laughed, but my face was red as I said (a little too cheery), "Rea-gan, he's not scary!" to which she said "Yes he is, Mommy."

Reagan, Reagan, Reagan... I waited a couple minutes and then apologized to the guy before I asked him if he had kids. He said yes, so I assumed he wasn't too offended...

Who's ready for Spring??

Reagan!!

A couple of our latest Reagan-isms:

Her Favorite New Song: The Hokey Pokey. I downloaded the song from iTunes and have done the Hokey Pokey more lately with Reagan than any other time in my life. She's actually pretty good. :)

Her Favorite New Place: Build-A-Bear. I took her to Jordan Creek and she chose a puppy (and named it Sally). The puppy got a baby puppy, a shirt, a leash & collar, and some toys. I think it cost more than a real dog. Reagan loved it so much, she thanked me, hugged me, and then kissed me on the lips. (If you know me, you know how 'surprised' I was when she kissed me.)

My Favorite Reagan Word: compiano. Its like a computer, but its a piano. Actually, its nothing like a computer -- its just a piano. Used in a sentence: "Daddy, will you come and play compiano with me?"

FFF - One year ago today...

I haven't been doing FFF, but this one made me smile. A lot can change in just a year.

This was Grant one year ago (3/20/07):

I can't leave out Reagan. This is her "lipstick" (soap crayons from Aunt Sandy).

Too Much Dora...

This is a picture of the "Grumpy Old Troll" for those of you who don't watch as much Dora as I do.

I have been sort of grouchy this last week. (I think much of it has to do with the weather and my need for clear roads, a break, and some fresh air.) But you know how kids are -- they pick up on stuff, so whether you feel grumpy or not, you need to put on a smile and 'use your kind words'.

Yesterday, Reagan was being Reagan and walking on a plastic piano toy of Grant's. I corrected her and explained that she could break it by standing on it, and that's not how we treat toys, please get down, etc., etc. She complied, but in 5 minutes she was back to doing the same thing. I first asked her nicely to get down and when she didn't obey right away, I said "Reagan. Stop. Get down." in my authoritative "mom voice". She got down , sauntered over to where I was sitting, smiled kindly, and said "What's the matter, Grumpy Old Troll?" She was trying to be sweet, but I burst out laughing.

I said "Reagan, did you call me Grumpy Old Troll because I said "Reagan. Stop."?" She smiled shyly and said "yeeeeees?". So I grabbed her and tickled her, because what else can you do?

I learned two lessons from this: I need to cheer up and Reagan watches too much Dora.

Sitting Pretty

He's not completely steady all the time, but he's getting the hang of it... :)
