GIRL!!
Reagan will be getting the sister that she wanted :) (I will probably have to remind her of that when they are 13 and 16 and fighting over clothes... :)
The best news is that everything looked healthy and good. 2 arms, 2 legs, 10 fingers, 10 toes, 2 kidneys, 4 heart chambers -- and all in spite of my high blood sugars and stress level. God continues to shower us with blessings we don't deserve.
We'll be taking name suggestions from now until February...

Tomorrow!
Tomorrow is ULTRASOUND day! I have been waiting so (im)patiently for this day!!
Everyone keeps asking me what I think and I keep saying that I have no idea. I wasn't sick with either Reagan or Grant and I haven't been sick with this one. My only real craving is cheesy stuff. (cheese balls, nachos, grilled cheese, etc. -- real healthy, huh??)
I suppose I will put my guess out there and say "girl" -- but I think you should know that I was convinced that both Reagan and Grant were girls. Grant is decidedly not. (He gave himself a black eye today while he was supposed to be taking a nap in his crib. He is always looking for ways to make himself laugh and his latest self-entertainment is to stand up and then do a belly-flop -- he giggles every time. Every time except for today when he hit his face on one of the crib rails - ouch.)
So anyone else want to take a guess?? You have at least a 50/50 chance of being right :)(Becky has already guessed "girl". :)
Keep in mind that I will be asking you for name suggestions sometime soon so get your thinking caps on... Reagan, Grant, and.........

An Update from Each of Us
Reagan:
She learned to ride her "big girl" bike this weekend. She didn't like it before because it was too "tippy" but today was the day she decided to ride. And ride she did! After 3 trips to the end of the road and back (about 1.5 miles!) she is a tired girl!!
Grant:
Is learning to walk more every day! He is getting fairly steady, but he is still faster at crawling... Grant insists on using his own spoon at meals now, and is getting good at his "baby sign" language. He loves eating and drinking, so it is no surprise that he picked up the signs for "more", "eat" and "drink" really fast. :)
Joel:
This morning Joel bought and installed a new garbage disposal in our kitchen :) Our old one was REALLY loud (and broke on Friday) and the new one is so nice! Joel got this job done in record time - so fast, I didn't think to take a picture. I guess he's the only update without one -- sorry, Joe. :(
Sally:
I read on someone's blog about saving money by making your own laundry soap. I calculated that my chapest "coupon" laundry soap costs about 9 cents per load and the homemade stuff will cost about 3 cents. Guessing at the number of loads I do, I think this will save $40 to $50 per year. I'll try anything once, so I went and bought the stuff she recommended and made it today. I'll let you know how it works :) It was fun and felt very old fashioned -- I even thought about taking my new soap and a washboard down to the creek behind our house... ok, not really :)

Happy (Late) Birthday to Joel!
Last weekend was Joel's birthday and I'm just getting around to posting this... Sorry, Joe :( I've said before that Joel is a good Dad and husband, but he proved it on his birthday :) It was a great day (for me) :) I got to take a nap and Joel and Reagan even made his "cake". It was actually chocolate chip, chocolate brownies with fudge frosting. I love chocolate, but its been almost a week and Joel is the only one still eating the brownies -- they are very overwhelming!
Grant thought it was his birthday again :)
Reagan was excited about the brownies, but only ate the vanilla ice cream...

Little Red Riding Hood and Death...
First the subject of death... Reagan thinks (and therefore talks) often about the topic of death - I would say several times per week. I've tried several approaches with her - none have really worked (and I will freely take your advice).
Reagan talking about this kind of all started when Creighton and Addy's Great-Grandma passed away and they went to her funeral (and then talked about it for awhile).
First she asked me "when am I going to die?" and I tried comparing it to Great-Grandma who had just died saying "you probably won't die until you're really old." That didn't seem to satisfy. The next time she brought it up, I tried being more honest and explaining to her that only God really knows when we will die.
I'm kind of at a loss now, and so here's how our latest conversations go:
Reagan: (out of nowhere and in a sad voice) "Mom, I don't want to die in a hospital."
Me: "Reagan, remember? You don't need to worry about it."
Reagan: "Because it will probably be a long time away?"
Me: "Yeah, it might be. Remember? God knows and he takes care of us, so we don't have to worry about it."
Reagan: "But.... Mom?"
Me: "Yeah?"
Reagan: "I will miss you when you die."
Me: "Yeah.... for a little while. But we will all be together in heaven someday, and then we won't have to miss each other anymore."
Reagan: "But....... I will still miss you when you die."
----------
Now enter "Little Red Riding Hood"... Here's a quick recap in case you are hazy on the details like I was:
Little Red Riding Hood is going to visit Grandma who is sick. She meets a tricky wolf who runs ahead of her to the Grandma's house, tricks the Grandma, eats her, then dresses in her clothes and gets in her bed to trick Little Red Riding Hood.
LRRH is easily fooled by the "wolf-in-Grandma's-pajamas" and comes too close to the wolf who then kills her and eats her.
Fortunately, a woodcutter is passing by and hears loud snoring that doesn't sound like a sick Grandma. He senses trouble and breaks into the grandma's house, discovering the sleeping, "wolf-in-Grandma's-pajamas" with a distended abdomen.
The woodcutter does the only logical thing and uses his axe (!!) to cut the wolf's stomach open and by doing so, he releases LRRH and her Grandma and saves them. The woodcutter's bravery and quick thinking is rewarded with some shared tea and raisin muffins by the fire.
-----------
Who writes this stuff?! This is supposed to be a children's story and I stumbled and fumbled my way through the story as I pretended to read and made up new parts.
Here is the new "G" Rated version -- feel free to use this for your kids:
The mean wolf chased the Grandma outside into the cold. Then he chased LRRH out into the cold, too so that he could have the bed to himself. Then the woodcutter came and chased the wolf outside (because wolves don't wear clothes and are supposed to live in the forest - not in people's houses) and then the woodcutter unlocked the door and let Grandma and LRRH back in. And they all lived happily ever after.
Reagan and I have already had a couple of talks about the unkind wolf who was selfish. She's also told me that "some wolves are nice and some are mean and she doesn't like the mean ones." Can you imagine the questions she would ask if I had told her the real story?! "Mommy, will a wolf eat me?" "Mommy, why did the Grandma die?" "Mommy, why didn't the grandma die in a hospital?"
When people say that parenting is hard, they aren't kidding -- this is hard work -- and just in time to discuss Halloween, too... :)

Barb
I meet regularly with a "Diabetic Educator". Her name is Barb and she's about my mom's age. She and I worked together through my pregnancies with Reagan and Grant. She helps adjust my insulin dosages and keeps tabs on all the other aspects of my diabetes. I fax her my numbers and she calls me every week or so to see how things are going. We're not 'friends' per se (she gets paid to talk to me), but I really enjoy her help. :)
This last week, I had another appointment. After adjusting some rates on my pump and talking about some other things, we were about done and had this conversation:
Barb: "Do you have any questions for me?"
Me: "Nope. I don't think so."
Barb: "I think we covered everything... um... you are current with your eye exam?"
Me: "Yep"
Barb: "You are checking for ketones?"
Me: "Yep - they're fine."
Barb: "Any problems with your feet?"
Me: "Nope - just fine."
Barb: "You're getting at least 30 minutes of rest per day -- just for yourself?"
Me: (blank stare)" um............. you're kidding, right?"
Barb: (smiling) "Just try, ok?"
Me: (lauging to myself) "Yeah, sure.... I'll try -- ok."

14 Days & 16 Days
14 Days...
...until I get to know whether this baby is a boy or a girl... Sept 30th at 3pm to be more specific. I can hardly wait! Being the planner, engineer, and bargain shopper I am, it has been beyond tough for me to be in the dark this long! What would I do without technology?! And you "I-want-to-be-surprised" types are a complete mystery to me. :)
16 Days...
...until I am done with my job. Remember I told you September 26th was my last day? Here's how great the people I work with are: They told me if I work even one day in October the "rule" is such that the DOT will pay my health insurance for the whole month. After talking to my supervisor and talking to Sadie, we all agreed another 4 days would work out fine. :) (And given the cost of a Type II ultrasound, Joel's expensive insurance premiums, and crazy out-of-pocket costs -- 4 days seemed like a small thing to me!) So now Thursday, October 2nd is my "official last day". (Yes, I really am leaving ;-)
----------------------------------
Lastly, my kids came home tonight!! I can't tell you how much I missed them and loved the break all at the same time :) I went into work today, and my co-workers commented on how "happy" and "relaxed" I was. I didn't think I looked haggard and stressed all the time, but in hindsight, I did cry two days last week (or was it three?) and then I surprisingly quit, so maybe I didn't have on the brave face I thought I did? :)
We all got home about 6:30 tonight and the kids spent an hour running around and visiting all their favorite toys (inside, outside, upstairs and down) before bedtime. It was really fun to watch. :) Before bed, I got extra hugs from Reagan and Grant snuggled his forehead against mine and then kissed me on the cheek. I'm telling you, moments like that are priceless! I love these kids and I know I have made the right choice to stay home :)
Dave and Linda, you guys are the best and we can't thank you enough! Thank you for loving our kids, wanting to know them as individuals, and for loving us and giving us time away. I think I may have narrowly avoided some kind of meltdown :)

Kidless Post
Joel's parents are watching the kids for us this weekend while we go (went) to a wedding and take a break. I miss them terribly and yet am thankful for the time off :) Here's a re-cap of things we've done (so far) that I am thankful the kids did not experience with us:
--> A wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner on Friday night. One of Joel's college roommates got married this weekend and Joel was an usher. It was nice to just eat and make small talk with the people next to us (and not have to feel guilty about the pile of food Grant threw on the floor).
--> Two nights in a Super 8 hotel room. The hotel was nice, just not adequate for two days and two nights for a family of four. If you have kids and have stayed in a hotel, you know what I mean. Since we didn't have anything Saturday morning, I slept in -- I got 12 hours of sleep! (I don't think that's happened since 2004.)
--> Shopping at the Outlet Mall in Medford on Sunday. It wasn't the shopping so much as it was the driving there and home. It was so quiet! After we were all talked out, I finally pulled out my book and started to read. (I don't think that's happened since 2004, either!)
--> Finishing the kid's sandbox under their play structure. (It required a (kidless) trip to the quarry and a trip to Lowe's) Here are some pics:
With the cover we made:

The almost done picture:

Today, Joel and I were eating lunch at Hickory Park when we discussed how we had been together A LOT since Friday. If fact we have spent 4 full days together! Without many other distractions (kids), we've already run out of new things to talk about :) Needless to say, this has been a great weekend for us (and our marriage), but we are looking forward to picking up the kids tomorrow! :)

Fun in the Rain
Another rainy day! When we got home, we let the kids play outside in the rain. Here's the difference between Reagan and Grant...
Grant: Happy no matter what - cold & wet -- sounds like fun!

Reagan: More like Mom. Happy to be dry and comfortable. She got all dressed up in her raincoat and water shoes and played for maybe 5 minutes. Maybe.

After supper tonight, we sat on the screen porch, had apple crisp, ice cream and "listened to the rain". The "listening to the rain" part was Reagan's idea.
Lately, my favorite thing to do with Reagan is to ask open ended questions. You just never know what you're going to get for an answer :) So after the two of us sat quietly for a minute on the porch with our dessert, I asked her what the rain sounded like to her.
Reagan: "Um....... a horn."
Me: "Really? What kind of horn?"
Reagan: "Like Happy Joe's horn!"
If you've ever been to Happy Joe's and heard the horn they use, you might agree with me that the falling rain sounds quite a lot different...
This is a picture of Grant (who is very proud of himself) using a spoon to try to scoop up and eat the rest of Reagan's ice cream. He did much better at it than I thought he would :)

Tomorrow we're headed to CF to drop off the kids with Grandma and Grandpa and then to Forest City for a rehearsal dinner and wedding this weekend. We are so fortunate to have great people who love our kids and love us enough to give us a break(!!) but, I was already getting choked up tonight just thinking about not being the one to put them to bed for the next couple of nights... :)

PE to SAHM
I quit my job today.
If you know me at all, you know that this was a really hard thing for me to do.
I've worked at the DOT for nearly 10 years and have loved it. I love roads, road construction, my boss and my co-workers. (I just love my husband, my kids, and my sanity more.)
I was determined not to cry as I told my boss this afternoon. When he cried first, all bets were off. I stopped at Fareway a half hour after our resignation converstion and the clerk (very tentatively) offered me a paper towel to use as a Kleenex.
My last day will be Friday, September 26th and as sad as I am to leave, I am looking forward to my new life as a Stay-At-Home-Mom. I have HUGE plans of organizing my house, grocery shopping during the day, visiting family and friends more, and attending the library story time. Check back in three months to see if I actually got any of these things accomplished ;-)

5 Things I Haven't Told You Yet..
Some things you might not know about me/us:
One: I have had several "hobbies" throughout my life - bargain-hunting and coupon-shopping are just the latest ones :) Some of my pastimes include collecting rocks, making a 50' long gum wrapper chain (I still have it!), and a collection of Care Bears.
Two: I watch too much TV. (I can't wait for all my favorites to come back on in the fall!) When the kids go to bed, from 8 to 10, we get our break. America's Got Talent is what Joel and I have been watching together this summer. :)
Three: Joel and Reagan enjoy playing hide-and-go-sneak. I enjoy watching -- especially when they are playing in a hotel room. Here's a picture of Joel's final hiding place on our Omaha vacation:
Four: I'm part of a bowling league and have been for 5 or 6 years. So far, I haven't drunk beer from a bowling shoe or bowled a 200.
Five: I'm a Type I diabetic. Usually diabetes and I get along fine - pregnancy is an exception. I check my blood sugars (at least) 6 times a day and I wear an insulin pump instead of taking multiple daily injections. Diabetes is my constant companion - every time I eat something I have to do a calculation in my head to figure out how to match insulin to the carbohydrates in my food. Its like background noise that runs through my thoughts all the time. I would love a vacation from it - or even better - a cure!
Lastly, this is unrelated but here is a cute picture I took of the kids a couple weeks ago :)

Rainy Monday Post
Where have I been?! Its hard to say... Some random pictures and paragraphs to fill in the gap:
Since my last post, we went to CF for Labor Day weekend. It was great as usual :) I don't know why I didn't think to take any pictures... My best memories are of Reagan and Bailey (and sometimes Charlie) playing pretend games and talking to each other. They both are "chatty" girls and I think it was fun for them to find another who loves to talk as much :)
This last weekend, my sisters and their families all came up/over/down to our house for a very quick "get-together". :) Below is a picture of all the kids together with my mom, who also came up for the afternoon.

Yesterday, was haircut day. My little fuzzball boy finally got a real haircut! (Until now, I've been chasing him around the house with scissors every so often. He lets me cut it about 5 times before he freaks out.) I was embarrassed when I took him in because it was so uneven and patchy :) This is a picture of him eating breakfast this morning. I think he's confused about why I am taking a picture.

Reagan's haircut turned out cute, too :) I think she looks like she's 5 :)
And a couple of "Reagan-isms" I can remember:
New word:
"Pesta": Meaning pinata. Commonly heard at WalMart near the birthday aisle. "Mom! Wook at the 'pesta'! Can I have one for my birthday?"
Yesterday on the way home from church:
Me: "Reagan, what was your story about in your class today?"
Reagan: "Um......."
Reagan: "Um.... I think.... it was..... um...... National Parks!"
